Chapter 18

Back at the house, Katie found Jason sitting by the stove with his shirt off. “So, you're up,” she called. “I thought you'd sleep all day.”

“Not me,” he replied. “I've got work to do.”

“The day's half over,” she scolded. “What would your dear old mother say, if she saw you sleeping in like that?”

“She wouldn't say anything,” Jason replied. “She'd get the horsewhip on me the minute the sun peeked over the hill.”

Katie laughed. “What do you have planned today?”

“Just what we talked about last night,” he replied. “I better get started branding the calves and running the fences. Those are the most important things. I better go over to the Dempsey place and ask Peter to give me a hand.”

“Don't bother,” Katie told him. “I just talked to Hannah out at the pump. He won’t help you.”

“Why not?” he asked.

“I don’t know.” Katie crossed to the stove a took the plate of pancakes out of the oven. “ She said something about him not being as young and strong as you and Jim. I didn’t really understand it, but both Josie and Hannah were acting strange this morning. I can’t figure out why.”

“What did Josie say about her first night with Jim?” he asked.

“She wouldn’t say anything other than that it wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be.” Katie dusted off her hands. “I don’t understand what’s going on, but something is.”

Jason pulled his shirt over his head and sat down at the table. He lifted a pancake onto his plate and began eating. “Well, I can’t go anywhere without a saddle and bridle from the stable. Once we figure out how to get them, we might as well get the wagon while we’re at it. I’ll need that to fix the fences and get in the firewood.”

“Do you have any ideas on how to get them?” Katie asked.

Jason shook his head. “None at all. One thing’s for sure, though. We’ll have to wait for Jim to leave. I’m not going over that fence with him around, not after he threatened to shoot us if we did.”

Katie nodded. “There’s plenty of work around here that I could put you to while you wait.”

“Ha!” he replied. “That’ll be the day. In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve seen enough to keep me busy for a week. I’ll finish breakfast, and then I’ll putter around the place until he leaves.”

And that’s what he did. Once he left the breakfast table, he went out to the wood shed and inspected the fuel supplies. Then he made a detailed survey of all the wood-cutting tools. He selected a bouquet of axes, mauls, saws, and other tools and took them all into the sunshine in front of the house. He sat on a block of wood and sharpened each one with a file.

Flash followed him everywhere he went now. He didn’t keep Katie company anymore. When Jason came back and set to work, the dog stretched out at his feet and dozed in the sun.
